BT gets tough on filesharing

June 30th, 2008   News   No Comments »

British Telecom (BT) has teamed up with the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to tackle the supposed problem of illegal filesharing. In shocking news, BT will apparently be cutting off customers who use their service to access copyrighted material through filesharing networks. We never thought this would happen in the UK.

This comes after Virgin announced that it will be sending out letters to people suspected of filesharing, but BT is taking it a step further. Virgin never implied it would be cutting off customers from the Internet.

BT has said that it isn’t doing anything out of the ordinary as customers should adhere to the ISP’s rules. Customers who continually break the rules (by downloading music?) will have their accounts suspended or terminated.

This is all kinds of stupid and can only result in a serious backlash. Where will BT draw the line in deciding who gets cut off?

Free Music Group

Free Music Group is a reference site that links to free, legal music. You’ll find some solo piano, some solo guitar, some Christmas music, some children’s songs and even Christian music. Not exactly hip, but it is free.

Net New Music

Yay. Net New Music is another classical music portal. Some avant garde stuff too. Very cool. Thousands of MP3s for free download from a bunch of different composers.

Catholic Planet

Well, if Christian music is what you’re after, then you’ve come to the right place with Catholic Planet. There’s a juke box and a lot of stuff available for download. We can’t guarantee that it’s all heavenly music, but some of this music is pretty cool. Bless you, child.

Classic Cat

Classic Cat has lots of free classical music. All the pieces are sorted by composer and work and everything is easy to sort through. You’ll be able to find something you like if classical music is your cup of tea.

Asian Classical MP3

Asian classical music? Yes! At Asian Classical MP3. There is such a thing. And you can find out all about here. The intrigue factor was enough to get us to head over there. The music has all been taken from tape recordings, believe it or not. Truly an experience to listen to some of this stuff. We like!

Public Domain 4U

We had the MP3 blues. But not any more, because Public Domain 4U is dedicated to the blues and other old music. It’s a small website, but if you ever need a break from all the indie and electronica portals out there, give this one a shot.

Helgoland

Helgoland. A strange name and some strange music. Avant garde pop from Hamburg. If that sounds like fun then go knock yourself out. We found some table-tennis inspired music. A first us.

Tune Resource

Tune Resource is touted as a resource for the greatest music ever recorded. Might be true. Lots of free MP3s to downloads. Buy old classics from the likes of Elvis and Ray Charles. Fun little website.

Lobe Candy

Lobe Candy offers free music
videos by the looks of things. Not sure what else this site is supposed
to be. Never heard any of the songs before. No downloads that we could
find.
