Pay-per-song websites

Some websites give you the option to pay per song. These websites offer legal music downloads for you to browse and pick up at your leisure. The benefit of these websites is that they're totally legal -- most of the time.

During our time surfing the web, we've come across a bunch of music-download websites hosted in places such as Russia. These websites usually offer cheap music downloads, but we're not sure how legal they are.

For the most part, we avoid such websites. There are, however, lots of websites that offer legal music downloads, and most of them you can trust. We've trawled the net in search of the top pay per song websites to bring you our recommended choices for legal music downloads. Take a look and let us know what you think. Do you use any of these websites?

Ear Buzz

Ear Buzz is supposedly the “place to buy independent music”. Lots of cool indie stuff available in the store. It’s all very non-commercial and there are some gems to be discovered. All the money from tracks goes straight to the artists. Songs cost $0.89. Some real hippy stuff in there too.

Into Music

Into Music has lots of tracks available for download. You can buy them for as little as £0.59. Browse by artist or a standard range of genres (dance, folk, soul, jazz, and so on). When we looked, there were old Bloc Party songs and Stereophonics still in their chart. If you buy 10 songs, you get one free. Lots of cool music on this site, even if it’s a bit behind the times.

Amazon MP3 is the big pretender to the throne that iTunes sits so proudly on. Although currently only available to people in the US, the store features MP3s that can be downloaded for any digital music player. Download songs for $0.99 or albums for $9.99. There is a comprehensive list of artists, covering songs both old and new. Once you download the music, it’s yours to do with as you please. Downloads are fast and there is a wide selection of music available. This could be an iTunes killer in the future. Easy-to-use interface as well.

iTunes

iTunes is currently king of the pay-per-track market. Through iTunes, users can buy music from a wide range of international artists, including all the latest releases of singles and albums. Apple claims that iTunes is the world’s largest juke box. Over three billion songs have been downloaded through iTunes so far. With such a comprehensive list of songs that can be bought for about a dollar a piece, can any service outdo iTunes?

CD Baby is the place to buy music with a massive selection. Listen to everything before you buy it. All genres are covered here. Prices are pretty average to be honest.
