Ares I Ready For Testing Next Month
As a commemoration of man’s first step on the moon, a new first stage five segment booster rocket named Ares I will be tested next month at Promontory. The Ares I which has been developed by ATK Space Launch Systems will be unveiled on Monday. Charlie Precourt, who is the vice President as well as General Manager of ATK Space Launch Systems, will be present at the unveiling. Others who will be present are Kent Rominger, an astronaut who has been on space shuttle four times, and is also Vice President Test and Research Operations of the company and the NASA Ares I First Stage Manager Alex Priskos.
The Ares I was constructed by three companies under contract. Alliance Techsystems Space Systems was given the prime contract for Ares I first stage. The prime contract for the avionics and upper stage of Ares I was given to the Boeing Company, while the contract form NASA’s Orion vehicle was given to Lockheed Martin Corporation. The development of Ares I was started in 2005. During the unveiling of the booster rocket, the history of the space program will be discussed by Precourt and Rominger. The discussion will highlight how the knowledge of Apollo and the shuttle program has helped in the development of the Ares I.
