NASA Plans To Abandon Ares Program
The Ares rocket, part of NASAs Constellation program which has been planning the design for the next generation of manned space missions, may not be cost effective for NASA and may be abandoned under Obamas new budget protocols. The program, which called for two separate rocket launches, one to carry a crew and the other to carry cargo and equipment, has been rife with technical problems. The amount and type of fuel required has been predicted to be of great risk to crew members and of course scientists don’t want a repeat of the tragic and expensive Challenger loss. The space shuttle itself is due to be retired from missions next year. NASA has already spent several billion dollars researching and developing the Constellation program and may attempt to combine the plans rather than starting a new design from scratch. Rumors suggest they may try to make one medium sized rocket capable of moving both crew and cargo to upper orbit. All of this is in preparation for a new wave of manned moon missions that will allow scientists to stay on the moons surface for several weeks at a time to conduct tests. They had hoped to make such missions possible by 2020 but now time lines have been pushed back indefinately until a solution for budget problems is agreed upon.
