“These coffees can make you feel unwell in the stomach or make you burp a lot,” the story has Almir Jose da Silva, chairman of the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (ABIC) stating.
Clearly, this kind of thing has to be dealt with, hence the Seal of Purity run by ABIC and which involves laboratory testing of coffee picked at random from supermarket shelves.
“Our forecast for 2010 is to carry out more than 3,000 collections” to test, Silva says the story, which goes on:
“ABIC members whose coffee is consistently free of impurities are allowed to use the Seal of Purity label on their packaging.”
Research shows when coffee is good quality, “it develops the habit of consumption and when it is bad it can stop people drinking coffee,” Silva says.
But not to worry. “Silva said the problem was still small given the huge amount of coffee sold in Brazil,” Reuters adds.
