DRM drama wrecks German Avatar preview
p2pnet news view | Movies:- “This could have been Dances With Wolves on acid, but instead it’s like a rave with hippies (on acid),” said one Rotten Tomatoes reviewer onAvatar, the 3D movie creator James Cameron promises will change cinema forever.
It certainly left audiences in Germany awestruck.
But not in a good way.
Instead of “technology enabling a jaw-dropping extra-dimensional experience, it brought the whole thing to a standstill,” says TorrentFreak, quoting Heise Online.
‘It’ was DRM.
“According to a report, 3D digital versions of the movie were delivered to certain cinemas but a problem with their encryption meant that they could not be watched at all the theaters,” says the story.
The problem was centred on DRM keys for the digital movie files, says Heise (Google translation).
“The stripes are encoded in JPEG2000 from the sale of 20th Century Fox by courier on external hard drives AES128 encrypted delivered to the cinemas,” it states, going on:
“Subsequently, the data must be copied (in the case of Avatar over 150 gigabytes) to the cinema server. Each digital projector server-generated combination of its own certificate and transmits it to the appropriate DRM service provider created for each film a unique key and returning it to the cinema. The key is only valid for a film print and a projector and can be limited to certain periods and times.”
How serious is the problem?
“Neither the rental nor 20th Century Fox, the digital distribution service Deluxe Digital stood on a statement made available,” says Heise.
