Google scarfs up Gizmo5. Official.
It’s official! Michael Robertson has become a Googler!
“Google has reportedly spent $30 million to buy Gizmo5, an online phone company” that’s akin to Skype, “but based on open protocols and with a lot fewer users,” said p2pnet yesterday, quoting Wired.
“Gizmo5’s founder Michael Robertson, a brash serial entrepreneur, would only say that he could not comment on rumors when asked by Wired.com about a story TechCrunch ran Monday reporting the acquisition,” said the post.
The headline was ‘Google Poised to Become Your Phone Company,’ a prospect that’s chilling and scary.
But why not? Google is already into everything it can lay its hands on which has anything to do with accessing personal and private data.
So why not telephones?
Now, “we’re pleased to announce we’ve acquired Gizmo5, a company that provides Internet-based calling software for mobile phones and computers,” say Wesley Chan and Craig Walker on behalf of the world’s largest, and most omnivorous, online advertising entity.
“While we don’t have any specific features to announce right now, Gizmo5’s engineers will be joining the Google Voice team to continue improving the Google Voice and Gizmo5 experience,” says Gargle, going on:
“Current Gizmo5 users will still be able to use the service, though we will be suspending new signups for the time being, and existing users will no longer be able to sign up for a call-in number.
“We’ve acquired a number of small companies over the past five years, and the people and technology that have come to Google from other places have contributed in many ways, large and small, to all kinds of Google products.”
No kidding.
