Obama administration pledges to combat piracy
p2pnet news view P2P | Politics:- “Vice President Joe Biden led a round table meeting of high ranking government officials and entertainment industry executives at the White House conference center … where he pledged that the Obama administration would work to combat piracy in the rapidly changing technological age,” says Main Justice.
Good news indeed and it’ll no doubt be greeted with sighs of relief from ship-owners around the world.
“Somali pirates have released a Greek-owned ship and its 21 crew members, including 14 Filipinos, after more than a month in captivity,” the Philippine government and the ship’s owner said today, according to the Associated Press, adding:
“All the crew are reported unharmed and are well despite their 43-day ordeal,” the ship’s owner, Meadway Shipping & Trading Inc., said in a statement in Athens, Greece.”
Also at Hollywood Joe’s anti-piracy meeting were US attorney general Eric Holder, Homerland security secretary Janet Napolitano, commerce secretary Gary Locke, FBI director Robert Mueller and Secret Service director Mark Sullivan,” said p2pnet recently.
However, we’re not clear why Sony’s Michael Lynton, Warner Bros’ Barry Meyer, Viacom’s Philippe Dauman, NBC Universal’s Jeffrey Zucker, Warner Music Group’s Edgar Bronfman, Harper Collins CEO Brian Murray, Universal Music Group’s Zachary Horowitz, the MPAA’s Dan Glickman, the RIAA’s Mitch Bainwol, IATSE’s international president Matthew Leob, AFTRA’S Kim Roberts Hedgepeth, DGA president Taylor Hackford, DGA exec director Jay Roth and SAG’s David White, were there as well.
But wait! It probably wasn’t those pirates. It was probably the other ones, and in that event, a p2pnet story from 2008 might cast light on the matter.
“Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG already have their own pseudo-cops and use enforcement agencies paid for by taxpayers as corporate copyright cops,” we said, wondering:
“So have they now been issued with gun permits and authorised to use deadly force when apprehending file sharers and counterfeiters?”
It would certainly explain Mueller, et al, and given all the other liberties the cartels have been granted by successive US governments, it wouldn’t be out of the question.
So with that out of the way, no need to stay tuned.
