Ten Mile Tide to the rescue

Thursday, January 21, 2010 1:25 PST -08:00   News

p2pnet news view Music | P2P:- San Francisco-based acoustic rock band Ten Mile Tide has once again jumped in to give p2pnet a hand.

They’ve donated Heartbeat of San Francisco, Guns, Grit, and Gold and You and Me Gonna Get Drunk Tonight from their latest album, Riverstone, to the p2pnet pay-whatever-you-can-afford (or don’t pay anything ;) ) downloads section.

Yesterday,  Maggie Council, Dennis O’Toole, Neil Leyton, Cold Joon and The Copyright Anarchists did the same.

In a freedom of speech case, I’m (still) being sued by Kazaa boss Nikki Hemming for allegedly defaming her almost four years ago.

The trial was slated to open on February 1, but the Vancouver Olympics have meant it’s been put back until I-have-no-idea-when.

Lotsa fun, having a lawsuit by a multi-million-dollar company hanging over your head for years on end.

I mention it because originally, Kazaa owner Sharman networks was also suing me and a benefit concert to help cover legal costs was held in Toronto.

Ten Mile Tide used to call itself the “unofficial poster band for the p2p file-sharing program Kazaa” clocking up 10 million downloads. But following the lawsuit, it publicly severed all its associations with both the application and its owner, Sharman Networks.

To emphasise the breakdown in the relationship, it made the tracks from its albums available as free mp3 downloads.

Now, in 2010, Ten Mile Tide is following the trend  increasingly adopted by indie bands: it’s offering its digital downloads based on a “pay-what-you-can” model.

Physical CDs and merchandise will still be sold at a fixed price, “but you may download copies of our albums for whatever price you choose,” it says.

“If that price is free then go for it, you have our blessing. If you have some money to spare then thanks, Knuckles does need a pair of new shoes.”

Thanks again, guys.

Cheers! And all the best …
