UMG’s Doug Morris: ‘taking back control’
p2pnet news view Advertising | Music:- “The music business has been taken advantage of for years. This is our opportunity with Vevo to take back control of our product.”
Fighting words, and they come from ex-Universal Music Group boss Doug Morris, seen here with an admirer.
He no longer holds the reins at UMG, said p2pnet recently, quoting BusinessWeek which went on, “Morris will continue to work on key projects for Universal, but will turn over day-to-day operations.”
And he’ll be looking to the likes of McDonalds to help him along.
He’s currently lining up advertisers for VEVO, an online ’service’ he dreamed up for streaming music videos on YouTube, we said, and now, “Universal Music Group Chief Doug Morris, head of the world’s biggest record label, is playing ad-man to lure marketers to the Vevo music-video Web site in the latest bid to rebuild the industry,” says Bloomberg News, going on:
“Morris, 71, has split his time the last few months courting advertisers for Vevo, he said in a Dec. 2 interview. The site will be introduced tomorrow at an event in New York where Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are scheduled to attend.”
Well-known music-loving companies “AT&T Inc., McDonalds Corp. and MasterCard Inc. have agreed to advertise, according to New York-based Vevo,” says the story, adding Vevo, powered by GooTube, “allows record labels to attract premium-prices for ads while controlling how music is viewed and distributed online”.
“The effort to reverse the industry’s decline may be Morris’s final salvo as he prepares to hand over the reins at Universal to international music head Lucian Grainge,” Bloomberg states.
Indeed.
Vevo is co-owned by Vivendi, Sony Corp, EMI and “Negotiations to add material from Warner Music Group Corp. are ongoing, people familiar with the matter said”.
