Yahoo: ‘$20 for the first ID …’

A Yahoo is also a company which rats out its own customers not only abroad — ask cyber dissidents Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning, in jail for 10 years — but also at home.
“It has come to our attention that a copy of the confidential, proprietary, and copyright-protected Yahoo! document has been posted to your website http://cryptome.org/isp-spy/yahoo-spy.pdf,” says a threatening letter from Yahoo legal yahoos to Criptome’s John Young, going on >>>
The un-authorised use and distribution this document, Yahoo!’s Compliance Guide for Law Enforcement, infringes Yahoo!’s intellectual property rights and constitutes a violation of US copyright law. It also infringes Yahoo!’s trade secrets and constitutes business interference.
$20 for the first ID, $10 per ID thereafter
Compliance Guide for Law Enforcement speaks for itself, and the ‘Compliance Team’ lives at Yahoo! Inc, 701 First Avenue, Sunnyvale, California 94089, Phone: 408-349-3687, Fax: 408-349-7941.
And if law enforcers are in a hurry, no worries.
“If you need to get in touch with Yahoo! after hours for an emergency request, the most reliable way is to contact Yahoo! Security at 408-349-5400, who will in turn page a member of Yahoo!’s compliance team,” it states. “Alternatively, you may contact the San Jose FBI Office, who will contact Yahoo! personnel. Please note that contacting Yahoo! compliance via the San Jose FBI Office may not necessarily be as efficient for an emergency response.”
Nor does it work for nothing.

These estimates are not price quotes, budgets, or guarantees and should not be used for budgeting purposes. Yahoo! reserves the right to adjust its estimates and reimbursement charges as necessary.
- Basic subscriber records: approx. $20 for the first ID, $10 per ID thereafter
- Basic Group Information (including information about moderators): approx. $20 for a group with a single moderator
- Contents of subscriber accounts, including email: approx. $30-$40 per user
- Contents of Groups: approx. $40 – $80 per group
Yahoo’s lawyers alone issued a DMCA takedown
“Shortly after Threat Level reported this week that Yahoo had blocked the FOIA release of its law enforcement and intelligence price list, someone provided a copy of the company’s spying guide to the whistleblower site Cryptome,” says Wired, going on:
“The 17-page guide describes Yahoo’s data retention policies and the surveillance capabilities it can provide law enforcement, with a pricing list for these services. Cryptome also published lawful data-interception guides for Cox Communications, SBC, Cingular, Nextel, GTE and other telecoms and service providers.
“But of all those companies, it appears to be Yahoo’s lawyers alone who have issued a DMCA takedown notice to Cryptome demanding the document be removed.”

I cannot find at the Copyright Office a grant of copyright for the Yahoo spying document hosted on Cryptome. To assure readers Yahoo’s copyright claim is valid and not another hoary bluff without substantiation so common under DMCA bombast please send a copy of the copyright grant for publication on Cryptome.
Until Yahoo provides proof of copyright, the document will remain available to the public for it provides information that is in the public interest about Yahoo’s contradictory privacy policy and should remain a topic of public debate on ISP unacknowledged spying complicity with officials for lucrative fee.
Note: Yahoo’s exclamation point is surely trademarked so omitted here.
