Harper government stomps the Yes Men
George W. Harper’s suck-up government has sunk to a new low.
It’s ramped up its attacks on the Yes Men, the satirical pranksters whose motto is, “Sometimes it takes a lie to expose the truth.”
“From New Orleans to India to New York City, armed with little more than cheap thrift-store suits,” they “squeeze raucous comedy out of all the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet,” they boast.
In their most recent escapade, during the recent Copenhagen climate conference, they forced the red-faced Harper crew to rush out an international statement disclaiming the Campaign for Climate Equity which “also introduced the Climate Debt Mechanism (CDM), ‘committing Canada to much-needed funding to those developing countries facing the most dire consequences of climate change’.”
“However, it was a satire and it seriously angered Environment Canada which declared in a hurried press statement, a ’spoof press release targeted Canada in order to generate hurtful rumors and mislead the Conference of Parties on Canada’s positions on climate change, and to damage Canada’s standing with the international business community’,” said p2pnet, wondering, “Could Canada’s reputation with respect to environmental matters be any worse than it is already?”
Now, in an unparalleled act of censorship, the Candian government “has used strong-arm tactics to shut down two parody websites criticizing Canada’s poor environmental policy, taking down 4500 other websites in the process,” say the Yes Men, going on >>>
The two websites, “enviro-canada.ca” and “ec-gc.ca”, are “directly connected to a hoax which misleads people into believing that the Government of Canada will take certain actions in relation to environmental matters,” wrote Mike Landreville from Environment Canada in an email to the German Internet Service Provider (ISP) Serverloft. “We trust you appreciate the importance of avoiding confusion among the public concerning Canadian governmental affairs and that you will assist us in preventing this hoax from spreading further.”
In a remarkable overstepping of bounds, Landreville also asked the ISP to “make every effort to prevent any further attempts concerning other environment-related domains (enviro, ec-gc, etc.) originating from your servers.”
In response to Environment Canada’s request, Serverloft immediately turned off a whole block of IP addresses, knocking out more than 4500 websites that had nothing to do with the parody sites or the activists who created them. Serverloft was shown no warrant, and never called the web hosting company about the shutdown.
The Yes Men point out Harper Yes, No, well, Maybe man Jim Prentice set up a Climate Change War Room to deliver “rapid-response messaging to any negative media coverage around Canada’s role at the Copenhagen climate change negotiations”.
The Green Pages CA, which exposed the existence of the ‘war room’, with “more than a dozen staff, pointed out Canada
“was declared the most obstructionist country in the world … by the more 400 environmental organizations attending the conference”.
