Hollywood celebrates China WTO ruling
Most of China’s foreign books, films and DVDs are illegal.
That’s the effect of a ‘final’ World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling.
Among other things, it means more Hollywood sex and violence will now officially enter the country, which has been restricting foreign movie imports to 70 a year
“The WTO’s top arbitration body Monday upheld a previous panel ruling against Chinese regulations on the import and distribution of books and audio-visual products, saying the Chinese regulations failed to comply with world trade rules,” says China state news agency Xinhua, going on:
“China lodged an appeal against the panel ruling on Sept. 22, after the arbitration body issued a ruling on the U.S.-China dispute in August, in which the United States accused China of not providing enough access for imports of publications and audio-visual products.”
Hollywood studios are “gratified by today’s decision and wish to thank U.S. officials for their hard work and dedication to this effort,” says Hollywood front man Dan ‘The Joker’ Glickman (right) in one of his last statements as MPAA boss.
When the WTO decision was originally announced, Glickman called it the “result of an enormous commitment from the members of the MPAA, our team, and significantly, the tremendously talented, dedicated team at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative,” adding:
“The Obama Administration’s Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, under the tenacious leadership of Ambassador Kirk, brought the decision home, and I applaud them for their hard work. I also want to thank the tireless efforts of Ambassador Schwab and her team in the previous Administration as well as the many Members of Congress and Senators who supported this case.”
It was money well spent.
Will the WTO ruling make a difference to anything?
Nope.
