Novell Moonlight 2.0 Gets Microsoft’s Blessing Linux Planet
Microsoft and Novell are broadening their three-year-old patent agreement, extending it for the first time to include all users of Moonlight, Novell’s open source implementation of Microsoft’s Silverlight media framework — regardless of their version of Linux. In 2006, Novell and Microsoft it may have intellectual property claims. As a result of today’s expansion of that deal, Moonlight users will enjoy protection under the patent covenant regardless of whether they’re using Novell’s Linux distro or another distributor’s.

China’s anti-porn drive to run until May Reuters
The Chinese government’s latest campaign against pornography on the Internet and through mobile WAP sites will continue through May next year, with an emphasis on breaking the business that support the sites, the Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday. An anti-pornography drive since last summer has also netted many sites with politically sensitive or even simply user-generated content, in what many see as an effort by the Chinese government to reassert control over new media and its potential for citizens sharing information and organizing. The website of a Chinese-language newspaper, Singapore Press Holding’s Lianhe Zaobao, was blocked this week in China after it ran an article about China’s tightening controls on the Internet. The government will draft regulations covering WAP sites, which provide Internet service for mobile phones, before March next year, Xinhua said, citing a statement from the central government office in charge of fighting illegal publications and pornography. The statement has not yet been publicly released.

Swedish TV giant eyes Apple with web campaign The Local
Swedish public service broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) is hoping to secure a speedy approval of its iPhone application by launching a guerrilla campaign aimed directly at Apple CEO Steve Jobs. SVT spells out its desire to make the Play video service available to the growing hordes of iPhone owners on the designated website dearstevejobs.com. In a direct appeal to the Apple chief, the broadcaster implores Jobs to take himself to the nearest webcam and approve the app in person:

Teen runs up dad’s cell bill to nearly $22,000 Associated Press
A 13-year-old teen was probably in hot water with his father after running up a cell phone bill of nearly $22,000. Ted Estarija said he was expecting his bill to be higher this month after adding his son to his plan, but wasn’t expecting a bill of $21,917 in data usage charges. The Hayward man said his Verizon Wireless bill soared after his son apparently downloaded about 1.4 million kilobytes of data last month. His plan didn’t cover data usage, so he was charged by the megabyte.

UK consumers enjoy ‘advanced’ digital communications BBC
The UK is one of the world’s most advanced countries in terms of digital communications, an Ofcom report says. The telecoms regulator said people in the UK watched more TV and sent more texts than people in many other countries, but had slower broadband. The UK remains the country with the highest proportion of households with digital TV on their main set – at 88%. The Ofcom study compared the UK with 12 countries including France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the US.

F.T.C. Says Intel Stifles Competition New York Times
The Federal Trade Commission, one of two main agencies that enforce the antitrust laws in the United States, is trying to pick up the pace — and look to the future. In an unusual complaint filed Wednesday against Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, the F.T.C. said it wanted to address anticompetitive abuses not only in the past and present, but also down the road.

Mag+, a concept video on the future of digital magazines Berg
I’ve got something I want to share with you. We’ve been working with our friends at Bonnier R&D exploring the future of digital magazines. Bonnier publish Popular Science and many other titles. Magazines have articles you can curl up with and lose yourself in, and luscious photography that draws the eye. And they’re so easy and enjoyable to read. Can we marry what’s best about magazines with the always connected, portable tablet e-readers sure to arrive in 2010?
