Ford Motor Co. plans to launch a software application for its Sync communication technology that could allow drivers to connect to Internet music such as Pandora, as well as many other Web applications, the Free Press learned today. The new software, code-named SyncLink for now, will allow companies to develop new applications for Sync in an open source environment similar to Apple’s online store for its iPhone.

Can the kids bring AT&T to its knees? CNN Money
The most interesting thing about Operation Chokehold — a grassroots denial of service attack against AT&T’s data network scheduled for Friday at 12 noon PST — may be who has signed on to take part. You can see their shining faces on Facebook’s official Operation Chokehold page, which as of Thursday morning had more than 3,000 fans. Scroll down the members list for affiliations and you’ll see a few companies, a bunch of colleges and a whole lot of high schools: Carlmont High, Las Lomas High, Casa Grande High, Galileo High, Triton High, Roseburg High, Rancho Buena Vista High, Shadow Mountain High, Henry M. Gunn High, West Allegheny Senior High, Connellsville Area Senior High and so on.

Mediaset beats YouTube in court Variety
Mediaset, the broadcaster controlled by Italo Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has won a major legal battle against YouTube. A Rome court ordered the video-sharing site to remove all illicitly uploaded Mediaset content on Wednesday. The broadcaster began legal action in July 2008 after a trawl through the YouTube site revealed 4,643 clips and 325 hours of unauthorized Mediaset material, the company said.

Judge urges eBay, Craigslist to resolve dispute Associated Press
After a trial lasting almost two weeks, the judge presiding over a lawsuit pitting online auctioneer eBay against online classifieds company Craigslist urged the two companies Thursday to try to resolve their differences before he issues a ruling. “I have an uncanny ability to make everyone unhappy,” Chancellor William Chandler III advised attorneys at the conclusion of the trial, adding that having the Delaware court resolve the dispute between the two Internet giants is “the second best way to do it.” Chandler said a resolution worked out by the companies themselves likely would be more acceptable to both sides than what he might decide.

Businesswoman sentenced to death for defrauding investors Xinhua
A businesswoman was sentenced to death in east China’s Zhejiang Province for defrauding investors of 384 million yuan (56 million U.S. dollars) on Friday. Wu Ying, 28, former owner of the Zhejiang-based Bense Holding Group, amassed the funds by promising high returns to investors between May 2005 and February 2007, according to the Intermediate People’s Court of Jinhua City. The money was used for Wu’s personal consumption and in paying back the loans and operation costs of her company, said the court.

Global pact on Braille books nears Financial Times
An international accord that would vastly expand the range of books and other copyright materials accessible to millions of blind people around the world came a step closer this week after a surprise shift in approach by Washington. Organisations representing blind and visually impaired people have been pressing for years for a global pact that would allow books produced in Braille and other special formats, including digitised audio texts, to be shared across national borders. But up to now the US and other industrialised countries have heeded strong opposition by the mainstream publishing industry.

Google Is in Talks to Buy Yelp New York Times
In a sign that Google is interested in broadening its reach among local businesses, the search giant is in acquisition talks with Yelp, the review site for local businesses, according to three people with knowledge of the deal. The two companies have had conversations for several years, but a more serious round of acquisition talks began two months ago, one of the people said late Thursday. The companies have discussed a price and are negotiating the details, but have not yet signed an agreement. Both Google and Yelp declined to comment on Friday.
