5 major publishers to take on Amazon LA Times
Five major publishers — Conde Nast Publications, Hearst Corp., Meredith Corp., News Corp. and Time Inc. — announced Tuesday that they would join forces to develop an online storefront to rival Amazon.com Inc. The companies — which publish such titles as Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, Wired and Vanity Fair — said their venture would sell newspapers and magazines online but could also be used to sell digital comics and books. As more readers cancel their print subscriptions in favor of browsing stories online, which has led to precipitous drops in advertising revenue, traditional media companies have been frantically experimenting with ways to deliver and make money from digital content.

Is this £410,000 watch the world’s most pointless timepiece? Telegraph
The Ultramarinum Marine watch, made by Swiss company Horus, promises to give its owners “the power of time”. By pressing a button, the company promises, “the owner can play with the seconds, minutes and hours and make them follow the pace of his or her choice, then return to current time at any point.” The idea is that millionaires can enjoy the illusion of being in a slower or faster world, by making their watch faster or slower. If they are sunbathing and want to pretend the world has stopped moving, they can even stop the time. When they need to return to the real world – or find out the correct time – they push a button and the watch returns to normal. [My God. And with chilren starving to death. Unphknbelievable.]

Pandora Is Coming to Your Car GigaOm
Net radio provider Pandora is preparing to move more aggressively into the automotive space, with deeper integration with car radios and controls on the horizon. During an early afternoon panel at the SF Music Tech Summit, chief technology officer Tom Conrad said the company’s mobile strategy will first hinge on a transitional phase in which its smartphone apps will be controlled from dashboard or steering-wheel interfaces, before dispensing with the smartphones altogether as the service is built into web-connected cars.

How fake sites trick search engines to hit the top Associated Press
With a little sleight of hand, con artists can dupe them into giving top billing to fraudulent Web sites that prey on consumers, making unwitting accomplices of companies such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. Online charlatans typically try to lure people into giving away their personal or financial information by posing as legitimate companies in “phishing” e-mails or through messages in forums such as Twitter and Facebook. But a new study by security researcher Jim Stickley shows how search engines also can turn into funnels for shady schemes. Stickley created a Web site purporting to belong to the Credit Union of Southern California, a real business that agreed to be part of the experiment. He then used his knowledge of how search engines rank Web sites to achieve something that shocked him: His phony site got a No. 2 ranking on Yahoo Inc.’s search engine and landed in the top slot on Microsoft Corp.’s Bing, ahead of even the credit union’s real site.

France’s Sarkozy takes on Google in books dispute Reuters
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday he would not let his country’s literary heritage be taken away by a “friendly” large American company, in a thinly veiled challenge to Google France is anxious to avoid French-language literature being swallowed by major international digitisation projects and is looking to create its own national digital champion.

White House to release new gov’t data collections Associated Press
The White House on Tuesday instructed every federal agency to publish before the end of January at least three collections of “high value” government data on the Internet that never have been previously disclosed, an ambitious order to make the administration as transparent as President Barack Obama had promised it would be.

Inebriated elk terrorizes streets of Södertälje The Local
A drunken elk reportedly attacked a pedestrian in the Hölö district of Södertälje south of Stockholm on Tuesday, prompting a response from police. Police received a call about an aggressive elk shortly after 3pm, the local Länstidningen Södertälje (LT) newspaper reports. The elk was reportedly hiding behind a bakery when it suddenly attacked a passerby, according to police, who asked from assistance from a game warden in dealing with the hostile animal. ‘The game warden recognized the elk. It usually walks around and eats apples, gets drunk, and then gets aggressive,’ police spokesperson Björn Engström told the newspaper. Elks are known to become intoxicated from eating yeasted apples, which can sometimes lead them to become belligerent.
