UN slated for stifling net debate BBC
The UN has been criticised for stifling debate about net censorship after it disrupted a meeting of free-speech advocates in Egypt. UN security demanded the removal of a poster promoting a book by the OpenNet Initiative (ONI) during a session at the Internet Governance Forum in Egypt. The poster mentioned internet censorship and China’s Great Firewall. The UN has said that it had received complaints about the poster and that it had not been “pre-approved”. “If we are not allowed to discuss topics such as internet censorship, surveillance and privacy at a forum on internet governance, then what is the point of the IGF?” Ron Deibert, co-founder of the OpenNet Initiative told BBC News.

Google, Authors try to answer book deal concerns Reuters
Google and the Authors Guild filed a new version of a deal to create a massive online library on Friday in hopes of answering antitrust and copyright concerns in the United States and overseas. Google’s plan to put millions of books online has been praised for expanding access to books but has also been criticized on antitrust, copyright and privacy grounds. According to a 30-page court filing made by the parties late on Friday, a section was eliminated that required the book registry created by the settlement to give Google at least as good a deal as any competitor. In another shift, money from unclaimed or orphan works will go to an independent fiduciary rather than go to the registry.

Online gangs cash in on swine flu Reuters
Criminal gangs are making millions of dollars out of the H1N1 flu pandemic by selling fake flu drugs over the internet, a web security firm said on Monday. Sophos, a British security software firm said it had intercepted hundreds of millions of fake pharmaceutical spam adverts and websites this year, many of them trying to sell counterfeit antiviral drugs like Tamiflu to worried customers. Tamiflu, an antiviral marketed by Switzerland’s Roche Holding and known generically as oseltamivir, is the frontline drug recommended by the World Health Organization to treat and slow the progression of flu symptoms. GlaxoSmithKline makes another antiviral for flu, known as Relenza.

Vivendi Remains Mum On NBC Universal Sale IMDb
In announcing its quarterly results late today (Thursday), Vivendi, the French media conglomerate, made no mention of whether it will agree to sell its 20-percent stake in NBC Universal to General Electric, which owns the remaining 80 percent. Such an agreement is required if Ge’s deal to form a joint venture with Comcast Corp. is to go forward, and several business writers had forecast that Vivendi would make its intentions known today. But at the beginning of a conference call with analysts, Vivendi Cfo Philippe Capron said that the company would not comment on its plans regarding NBC Universal.

Disney Wants a Piece of Retrans and a Fee-based TV Everywhere Model B&C
Disney CEO Bob Iger outlined his views on retransmission fees and his disagreements with TV Everywhere as it is taking hold. Speaking on the company’s fourth quarter earnings call Nov. 12, Iger said: “We’re intent on getting paid fair market prices or fair market value. We have a good relationship with multi channel providers who’ve paid us well and we’ve been increasing value for them by investing in programming and brands; ESPN, Disney and ABC Family.” He continued, “We’re watching carefully the dynamic about retransmission and fully expect to participate in the trend however it goes.” Disney Co. owns ten stations. Iger’s response to an analyst’s question relates to a recent push by both Fox and CBS to get a piece of their non-owned station group’s retransmission dollars which are paid by pay-TV providers.

President Obama Admits That He’s Never Used Twitter, But Thinks The Chinese Should Be Able To TechCrunch
President Barack Obama has one of the most popular Twitter accounts with over 2.6 million followers. It should be no real surprise that most of the time it’s not him tweeting from it, instead its various people within the White House communication team that use the account to send out information. And now that he is the President, certainly there are some security concerns with him using something like Twitter. But, did you know that he’s actually never used Twitter at all? ['He’s Never Used Twitter' and 'most of the time it's not him' ? ;) ]

Bill Gates plants (wetter) smooch on Steve Jobs The Register
Bill Gates can’t say enough about his BFF, CEO of the Decade Steve Jobs. In a CNBC interview on Thursday, Gates offered his considered opinion that Jobs saved Apple from almost certain doom. When Jobs returned to Cupertino, Gates told CNBC, “Apple was in very tough shape. In fact, most likely it wasn’t going to survive.” But with his “inspiration” and “great products and design” Jobs, in Gates’s opinion, “made Apple back into being an incredible force in doing good things.”
