Lawmakers seek ban on laptops in airliner cockpits Associated Press
Lawmakers are moving to ban the use of computer laptops and other personal electronic devices in airline cockpits to prevent another incident like the Northwest Airlines plane that overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles. Sen. Byron Dorgan, chairman of the aviation subcommittee, said in an interview that his staff is working on a bill that he expects to introduce in about a week. He said he was surprised to learn after the Oct. 21 incident that the Federal Aviation Administration doesn’t specifically prohibit pilots from using laptops, DVD players, MP3 players and other devices during flight except below 10,000 feet while the plane is taking off or landing.
N.Y. AG Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Intel Slashdot
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against microprocessor maker Intel, alleging that the company engaged in a ’systematic campaign’ of illegal conduct to protect a monopoly. Cuomo’s lawsuit alleges that Intel extracted exclusive agreements from large computer makers and threatened to punish those perceived to be working too closely with Intel competitors. Intel gave computer makers payments totaling billions of dollars in exchange for the exclusive agreements, and the company threatened to cut off payments to computer makers or fund their competitors when they worked with other microprocessor makers, the lawsuit alleged.
Competition watchdog to look into ITV’s Friends Reunited sale The Guardian
ITV’s £25m sale of Friends Reunited is to be investigated by competition regulators over fears that new owner DC Thomson will dominate the UK online genealogy market. DC Thomson acquired Friends Reunited for £25m in August, snapping up the social networking website to ramp up its genealogy business Find My Past by merging it with Genes Reunited to create the largest online subscription service in the UK. Brightsolid, the DC Thomson subsidiary that runs Find My Past, referred the deal to the Office of Fair Trading – recognising it would give the company more than a 50% market share. However, the deal was expected to be cleared because the paid-for genealogy website sector is part of a larger market as far as free competition is concerned.
AT&T sues Verizon over ‘there’s a map for that’ ads Engadget
Whoa — we just got word that AT&T is suing Verizon for false advertising over Big Red’s “There’s a map for that” ads. We’re reading the complaint and motion to stop the ads right now, but here’s what AT&T says is the big problem: ‘In essence, we believe the ads mislead consumers into believing that AT&T doesn’t offer ANY wireless service in the vast majority of the country. In fact, AT&T’s wireless network blankets the US, reaching approximately 296M people. Additionally, our 3G service is available in over 9,600 cities and towns. Verizon’s misleading advertising tactics appear to be a response to AT&T’s strong leadership in smartphones. We have twice the number of smartphone customers… and we’ve beaten them two quarters in a row on net post-paid subscribers. We also had lower churn — a sign that customers are quite happy with the service they receive.’ AT&T also says its network reaches about the same number of people as Verizon’s, so we’re thinking it’s a little miffed that it’s being portrayed as an also-ran here. We’ll update as we learn more, keep it locked!
