Mandelson’s piracy tactics leave Tories with a dilemma Times Online
James Blunt, who wrote to Lord Mandelson on the vexed subject of internet piracy, called the internet service providers “drug pushers” in an e-mail that the minister saw fit to publish this week. Those terrible ISPs, you see, are the people who allow us hapless addicts, also known as consumers, to download and copy music free — the only drug for which you don’t have to pay. You can sympathise a bit with Mr Blunt — yes folks, piracy is illegal — but wonder also, who is doing the using here. Why else would the Business Secretary publish the views of the You’re Beautiful singer (and Noel Gallagher’s and Sir Elton John’s) if it was not to give his proposals on internet disconnection the sheen of celebrity endorsement. Look though at what Lord Mandelson actually proposed, and it is obvious that the Business Secretary stepped back from the brink, at least this side of an election.

Microsoft Tortures Little Kids With Bing Jingle TechCrunch
Maybe you’ll recall when I ripped apart the Bing jingle winner back in August. It was bad — real bad. But its creator, Jonathan Mann is a talented guy, and even made a jingle ripping me, which was both better than the Bing one, and funny. Sadly, Microsoft now controls his Bing jingle and is subjecting little children to it. As you can see in the video below, Microsoft has forced a bunch of middle schoolers in Pennsylvania to learn and perform Mann’s Bing song. The horror. It’s hard to watch this without immediately thinking about parents who accept money to allow their child to be sponsored. Is this the future of branding?

Horror videogames scare up record sales Reuters
What do Jigsaw from “Saw,” Freddy Krueger, and Jason from “Friday the 13th” all have in common, besides serial killing? Videogames, if the horror stars’ latest round of promotions are to be believed. Horror videogames are having a record year as zombies, monsters, demons, and chain-sawing wielding psychos fight against the consoles, making videogames the new home of horror for some. Michael Pachter, video-game analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, said about $147 million worth of horror videogames have sold in the United States alone this year through September compared to $131 million in total for all of 2008.

SirsiDynix Corp restricted lobby paper against Open Source technologies Sep 2009 Wikileaks
This document was released only to a select number of existing customers of the company SirsiDynix, a proprietary library automation software vendor. It has not been released more broadly specifically because of the misinformation about open source software and possible libel per se against certain competitors contained therein.
SirsiDynix is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with one of the largest public libraries in the U.S. (Queens Borough, NY) and this document does illustrate the less-than-ethical nature of this company. The source states that the document should be leaked so that everyone can see to what extent SirsiDynix will attempt to spread falsehoods and smear open source and the proponents of open source.

Facebook Dethrones Spam King PC World
Today, a California court awarded Facebook $711 million in civil damages against Sanford Wallace, the notorious sell proclaimed “spam king” who is also known by the derisive nickname “Spamford.” The court found Wallace gufacebook spamilty of violating the CAN-SPAM act, and he could face time in prison if convicted. Wallace allegedly accessed Facebook accounts without obtaining permission, and used them to make bogus wall posts and spam the account holders’ friends. Those actions run afoul of the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, which sets guidelines for commercial e-mails, which are enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Wallace is best known for his e-mail marketing company Cyber Promotions, which was at one time the largest source of unsolicited e-mail in the world. In the proceeding years, another Wallace venture called SmartBOT faced FTC action for infecting computers with spyware.

Internet Addresses Can Use New Scripts New York Times
By the middle of next year, Internet surfers will be allowed to use Web addresses written completely in Chinese, Arabic, Korean and other languages using non-Latin alphabets, the organization overseeing Internet domain names announced Friday in a decision that could make the Web more accessible. Rod Beckstrom, chief executive of Icann, at the opening ceremony of the Internet organization’s annual meeting in Seoul on Monday. In an action billed as one of the biggest changes in the Web’s history, the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers — or Icann — voted Friday during its annual meeting, held in Seoul, to allow such scripts in Internet addresses.

Unfinished Windows 7 feature turns laptops into Wi-Fi hotspots Computerworld
A Philadelphia developer has rooted out an unfinished feature of Windows 7 that turns any laptop into a wireless access point, allowing other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to share the connection without special software. Nomadio, which specializes in military network consulting and development, used the new “Virtual Wi-Fi” feature in Windows 7 to create Connectify, a free application that it released as a beta last Friday.
