p2pnet music: Maggie Council
I’ve been running p2pnet since 2002, sometimes by the skin of my teeth, and now is one of those times. However, I’m in a strange position.
Advertising keeps the site online, but it’s never been the usual kind. When p2pnet first went up, no ads. It was purely a personal site, just as it is now. But it quickly grew to the point where I was on it 24/7, living off my savings. Then five legally constituted companies who’d established themselves online with P2P applications which allowed people to share with each other each rented an ad. This wasn’t promote themselves. They wanted to help me keep p2pnet going. One by one, however, they were killed by corporate music cartel labels who, as we all know, loathe and fear any form of competition, and who have by now wasted hundreds of millions of dollars trying to turn people with free will into compliant consumers, and gain complete control of the internet.
When the ads went, one anonymous sponsor took up most of the slack and a couple of new advertisers came along and briefly, my income was marginally more than my outgoings. However, my sponsor had to pull out in December because of the economic crisis, and two advertisers did the same for the same reason.
Staying online is, then, a major preoccupation for the moment, and some musician friends have donated their music to help me. Is p2pnet worth a $1 to you every now and then?
If you like good music …
Ladies first, so meet Maggie Council, a wonderful person and a great guitar player and song-writer. We’ve been close friends for years — since around the time I started p2pnet, in fact. But we’ve never actually met. Only on the net … ![]()
She’s already contributed two tunes, with more to come, and here’s a new one – Not in the House.
When Maggie was putting it together she sent me the bass track and my next fun project is going to be making a mix with that and some of my stuff.
For now, she says >>>
You might be thinking, why should I listen to Maggie’s music? While one side of me immediately responds ‘got me’ with a wide-eyed shrug, the practical side says, well, she’s shared stages with locally, nationally and internationally known artists like:
Acoustic Alchemy, Joan Armatrading, Steve Earle, John Hiatt, Steve Forbert, Hot Tuna, Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, Robert Earl Keene, Jr., Ronnie Milsap, Maura O’Connell, The Band, Michelle Shocked, Al Stewart, Chris Smither, the subdudes, John Wesley, Beanstalk, Joe Popp, My Little Trotsky, Ronny Elliot, Rebekah Pulley and Warren Zevon.
Or it might be you just like good music. Either way, you can buy her Not in the House album at CD Baby for a mere ten bucks.
Thanks, Maggie.
