p2pnet reviews #1: Pete Seeger songs & CD

Thursday, January 7, 2010 12:37 PST -08:00   News

p2pnet news view | Reviews:- One of the most memorable parts of 2009 for me was a chance to have a conversation with a music legend.

It was on the phone. But it was still —- Pete Seeger.

Not long after a large package arrived by snail-mail: the expanded third edition of Pete’s Where have all the flowers gone? a ‘music & autobiography’.

And CD. :)

I’ve been hanging onto it because one of the new p2pnet features I’d planned for 2010 was a reviews section, and I wanted Pete’s book to be the first item.

The Green Guerrillas

Where have all the flowers gone? has more than 200 listings with music, words and chords.

‘Expanded’ means it has with another 30 pages of newer tunes.

But there’s more to the songs than songs.

For example, on page 123 of the 313-page compilation, Visions of Children, Pete relates how he once tried to put words to the two-part melody in Beethoven’s 7th.

The Green Guerrillas had a big rally on 42nd Street in New York City, he says. The idea was to save 115 “beautiful community gardens that Mayor Giuliani wanted to sell to developers.”

He eventually got help from six female members of the audience and, “In later concerts I asked for singers and rehearsed ‘em in the intermission.”

There’s even a happy ending. “Thanks to Bette Midler and the Trust for Public Land, 112 of the gardens were saved,” he says.

But Where have all the flowers gone? is alot more than that.

It comes with a CD holding 267 MP3s which give, at the least, the first verse and chorus of every song in the book.

Not only but also, “it corrects 100s of mistakes in the old 1993 edition,” Pete told me in a note.
