Giant asteroid to pass earth at close range Toronto Star
The head of Russia’s space agency called on Wednesday for a massive planetary effort to deflect a massive asteroid as it skips by the Earth in 2029. “People’s lives are at stake,” Anatoly Perminov told Voice of Russia radio. “We should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow us to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen and kill hundreds of thousands of people.” Perminov said that Russia will consider building a spacecraft designed to nudge the Apophis asteroid away from the Earth, and invited NASA, the European Space Agency and the Chinese space agency to join him.

Xbox ‘thief’ is Xbusted New York Post
An Xbox marked the spot where a Bronx man stockpiled a treasure trove of pilfered electronics, police said. Jeremiah Gilliam, 22, was caught after playing a stolen game console online — allowing cops in Pelham, where it was stolen, to trace the IP address to his grandmother’s address, cops said. There, detectives found dozens of video games, laptops, and GPS devices believed to have been stolen from as many as 200 car break-ins and several home burglaries in Westchester County. Gilliam was already under investigation for 13 robberies of unlocked cars, Pelham Detective John Hynes said.

Broadcasters’ Woes Could Spell Trouble for Free TV ABC
As the nation’s biggest pay-TV provider, Comcast Corp., prepares to take control of NBC, it has not signaled any plans to reorganize the broadcast network. The business model is unraveling at ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and the local stations that carry the networks’ programming. Cable TV and the Web have fractured the audience for free TV and siphoned its ad dollars. The recession has squeezed advertising further, forcing broadcasters to accelerate their push for new revenue to pay for programming. That will play out in living rooms across the country. The changes could mean higher cable or satellite TV bills, as the networks and local stations squeeze more fees from pay-TV providers such as Comcast and DirecTV for the right to show broadcast TV channels in their lineups. The networks might even ditch free broadcast signals in the next few years. Instead, they could operate as cable channels — a move that could spell the end of free TV as Americans have known it since the 1940s.

2010 gears up for explosion of 3D BBC
If 2009 was dominated by touch technology then 2010 looks set to be the year of 3D. 3D has been one of the biggest hits of the cinemas this year and it is likely to continue its stride into other mediums during 2010, experts agree. TV manufacturer LG wants to sell nearly half a million 3D-ready TV sets next year as the World Cup kicks off in the format. Meanwhile laptops and games consoles are also getting a 3D makeover. Acer has already released what it is claiming is the world’s first 3D-capable laptop, and most agree it will be the first of many.

Dodgy dentist repaired same tooth 71 times The Local
A dentist from Gothenburg in western Sweden has been reported for malpractice by a patient who claims he had the same teeth repaired dozens of times. Two individuals have reported the dentist to the Swedish Medical Responsibility Board (Hälso- och sjukvårdens ansvarsnämnd – HSAN), claiming he committed multiple incidences of malpractice over a several-year period. One patient said that he visited the dentist 135 times in six years. During these visits, the dentist fixed one tooth 71 times, another 59 times and a third 51 times.

Spinvox bought by Nuance for £64m BBC
UK firm Spinvox, which converts voicemails into texts, has been bought by speech recognition company Nuance for $102.5m (£64m). The deal is worth $66m in cash and $36.5m in stock, about a third of the previously rumoured $146m price tag. Nuance told BBC News it is too early to say what impact the deal will have on Spinvox’s 230 staff. It also declined to comment on whether Spinvox founders Christina Domecq and Daniel Doulton will remain on board.
