Pay Up! – Telefonica tells Google, et al
The Spanish arm of telecom operator Telefonica wants to charge the likes Google and Yahoo for using its network.
The company, which has just received European Commission approval to buy German ISP Hansenet, figures Google, et al, “use a lot of network bandwidth for free, something which was good for them but not for Telefonica,” says the Associated Press.
Telefonica president Cesar Alierta (right) “says his company, which operates in Spain and across Latin America, provides the network, product sale, customer care, installation and maintenance to search engine companies that profit from using them,” according to the story.
Things have to change, he declared.
