The mainstream media as functioning, effective systems for telling us what we need to know are dead, dead, dead.
The $500 Apple iPad proves it.
It’s a computer, for God’s sake. Not a cure for cancer. But even before the thing was officially released, the lamescream press corpse was hyping it insanely, inspiring hundreds of thousands of articles around the world.
Nineteen deaths have been linked to Toyota vehicles surging out of control, says the Vancouver Sun. But reporting on this major news is overshadowed by the official launch of the iPad.
Truly, there is no tribe like the Apple tribe. You can’t even joke with owners of Apple computers, iPod, and so on. They get all upset.
The iPad resembles a big iPhone, which is itself no more than a touch-screen computer with a cellphone on board.
If it’d been released by any other company, it would’ve inspired a certain amount of coverage, mainly in the trade media.
But it’s yet another Apple thingie so it’s FRONT PAGE NEWS !!!
Book of Jobs revealed to all shouts a Toronto Star headline.
“Before a packed crowd of journalists, analysts and software partners in San Francisco, Apple Inc. superstar CEO Steve Jobs yesterday took the wraps off a new device that’s been the subject of considerable speculation and hype among techies for the better part of six months,” says the story, going on:
“Jobs, in his trademark black shirt and blue jeans, officially unveiled the iPad, a thin, 9.7-inch touch-screen tablet that can be used to download and read electronic books and papers, play games, surf the web, read email, flick through photos and watch videos – all via your fingertips.”

But wait. Can’t most notebooks do that? And more?
