UK cops eye spies in the sky
The way things are going, it may not be long before birds will be in the same boat as whales, so to speak.
Above- and below-surface naval vessels are polluting undersea environments with dangerous and sometimes deadly (to underwater dwellers) sonar emissions.
Now that more and more enforcement agencies are getting into the remote aircraft business, will our skies soon be crowded with unmanned aircraft, spying on everything we do and at the same time making flight risky for our feathered friends?
Weapon-carrying, remotely controlled aircraft “are standard gear for the military and agencies such as the CIA and it’s not in the least surprising to find this kind of spy plane being eyed by a police force,” said p2pnet recently, going on:
“The pic on the top is from a 2007 Defensetech post and shows an Insitu Inc ScanEagle launching. The one underneath is a clip from a Local2 TV news expose of the secret (or so local cops thought) Houston test.
“The frame used to launch both aircraft look similar, if not the same.”
Now, “Police in the UK are planning to use unmanned spy drones, controversially deployed in Afghanistan, for the ‘routine’ monitoring of antisocial motorists, protesters, agricultural thieves and fly-tippers, in a significant expansion of covert state surveillance,” says the Guardian, going on:
“The arms manufacturer BAE Systems, which produces a range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for war zones, is adapting the military-style planes for a consortium of government agencies led by Kent police.
“Documents from the South Coast Partnership, a Home Office-backed project in which Kent police and others are developing a national drone plan with BAE, have been obtained by the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act.”
Not at all incidentally, BAE is also the company behind Virgin Media’s online customer spy project.
Meanwhile, Britain already has more citizen spy cams than any other country in the world.
