The Philippines is a diverse culture of musically inclined people.  It is basically because of a deep rooted “colonial mentality” of its populace – a 3-hundred year Spanish colonization to be exact.  No matter how hard they deny such behavior, still it remains to manifest on their lifestyles as well as their music.

Because such mindset is embedded so deep within them, most of the musical pieces that can be considered Original Pilipino Music (OPM) are written in English or Tagalog since these are considered the dominant languages.  Other regional dialects are considered inferior and does not measure up to the standard of the superior Tagalog.   In fact, there are a large number of songs written in other dialects such a Cebuano, Ilonggo, Waray-Waray, Bikolano and Kapampangan among others.

However, some of the Bands that were from Pampangga and Davao have made its way MTV Philippines making the record of being the first non-Tagalog dialects to enter such degree.  This phenomenal success is contributed to the modern day trend of uploading of Original Pilipino Music videos on YouTube and other social networking sites.  The internet has become an exceptional venue for these aspiring Bands to be recognized.

Since the day a viral video became a success by just being watched by millions, everyone who thinks they also have that x-factor of becoming a video or music sensation have taken that opportunity by joining and uploading their files online.  Yet some of them are simply by just sheer talent, just like what happened to Arnel Pineda of Journey, after being watched on YouTube, he made it big in the US.

The internet era has broken all barriers that have made it difficult for some aspiring stars to shine.  A number of success stories by real people who have beat the odds by just simply showing what they got is the newest trend.  With online talent showcase via YouTube and other social networking sites and even peer to peer application programs, you do not need a demo anymore.  All you got to do is upload and share your videos and music to everyone. And hey, dreams do come true.
